Origin[]

In Des Moines, Iowa on October 27, 1977, Anita Bryant and other members of the "Save Our Children Campaign" held a press conference. Bryant, a former orange juice spokeswoman, beauty queen, and singer was a major figurehead in the campaign against gay rights, particularly the Florida anti-discrimination ordinance protecting against discrimination based upon sexual-orientation.

She believed that the anti-discrimination law would "promote the homosexual agenda", which would lead to child molestation and "homosexual recruitment". During the press-conference she criticized homosexuals for the "flaunting" of "their sinful lifestyle". She is still widely regarded as one of the leading voices of historical bigotry in the LGBTQ community.

At the press conference, Tom Higgins, a gay rights activist, threw a banana-cream pie at her face, setting a precedent for political pie-ing.

Anita Bryant continued her campaign against gay civil rights, and thus became a major figurehead for homophobia and discrimination. In retaliation against her, the gay community boycotted orange juice, refusing to use it in bars. A new sour apple drink was mockingly named after Anita Bryant. In response the orange juice counsel removed her as their spokeswoman. For many years she tried to continue her campaign as well as her singing career. After many failed political attempts and declaring bankruptcy several times she has retired to her home in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Usage[]

When worn the earrings will increase pre-existing hatred and prejudice of a group/person/thing. The effects become stronger the longer they are worn. The user will face public scorn and financial troubles as a result of their hateful actions.

Collection[]

Care must be taken when placing this artifact. It must not be allowed anywhere near Tom Higgins' Pie Tin as the objects do not like each other. It must not be placed next to other hate artifacts as the earrings have been known to increase the power of their hate. A Love Bead Necklace is wrapped around the earring box they are kept in to cancel out their dormant effect.
