Gloves that was given to Alan Diaz by Armando Gutierrez, the rage from having his nephew torn from his arms turned the gloves into weapons. Hoping to be used as evidence in the raid against his home to take Elian by force Gutierrez gave the gloves to the reporter hoping that it would have DNA evidence of the boy, himself and the Border Patrol agent proving what happened in the house. It was secondary as Diaz had several photos of the event, the gloves were eventually lost in the possessions that was brought in as evidence after the raid.

Gutierrez was only able to hold onto his nephew for a minute, yelling and cursing the officer who was trying to pry the boy from him. Because of this when the worn gloves touch and hold onto anything for a minute then pull away the affected item will explode five minutes after the fact. Doesn't work if only one glove touches the item, must be both.
