Origin[]

When Dr. Carl Carlson was exposed to the Artifact in Section 5, nobody quite knew what precisely affected him. A few of the miraculous symptoms included telepathy, telekinesis, and unnatural healing ability. After he was “reassigned” to a private firm, Taggart began analyzing the few biological samples taken during his medical exam. From his altered genetic structure came a method of cellular regeneration.

Effects[]

Injecting into an injured subject can simulate biological components. The physical structure of hair, bone and tissue can be copied to replace damaged cells. They repair and self-propagate like living cells as an organic band-aid until the wound fully heals. Any source of carbon can be converted into fuel.

All units run on distributed load computing. Each individual can act as a separate brain ganglion capable of relaying information about the construction from one node to another. This shared workload prevents huge swathes from failing from over-concentration. An exponential growth program channels excess resources into building new nanoids. More cells, more intelligence among them.

Although adaptable, they can only maintain self-autonomy over their creations when properly activated and shutdown. Failure to fully turn them off leaves them intercepting other broadband signals. Matching frequency oscillations makes destructive interference in the signaling components and eventually leads to a total disconnect from the input controls.

Appearances[]

It appears in the Season 1 episode “Primal“. Originally Taggart used them to heal Lowjack from a car crash. He didn’t notice the container was left unsealed, and they slithered away into the vents under the influence of a Stark’s controller Mental Mouse Neural Interface System. As the HVAC problems continued they sent specialist Larry to investigate, but he disappeared with a scream for help. Carter and Taggart searched through and found his remains, along with swirling clouds of the nanoids after consuming his body. They initially copied Lowjack, then Larry, then moved up to duplicate Stark, the source of their commands.

Real Stark was stashed away in a utility space while the nanoids created a doppelganger with access to his memories. He had unclear dreams of whatever his copy did and transformed into since the link between them was still active. Meanwhile, the EM shield was interfering with the circuitry and more copies were built to shutdown the main control center.

All the Starks began marching through town with the orders to replicate. The rest spread out as they were still following Nathan’s subconscious desires for power. Only something equally emotional could trigger Nathan to change the parameters of what the copies wanted. Mainly, Carter kissing Allison and infuriating Stark. They managed to lure the clones into a ballroom and play Spencer’s new speaker system. A loud, low 2 Hz frequency broadcast disrupted all intercell communication and caused the constructs to vibrate apart.
