Origin[]
Joe Markham originally came up with the idea for KONG dog toys in the 1970s, which he noticed his German shepherd Fritz damaging his teeth by chewing rocks. Not wanting his best friend to continue to hurt himself Markham noticed that Fritz enjoyed chewing on a hard rubber Volkswagen Bus suspension device so he spent six years experimenting with different compounds to perfect the size and shape of the toy. The love and care for his friend and loyal companion went into the original toy making it indestructible and a favorite toy of Fritz.
