In 1996, 15-year old Kyunia Taylor and her bus driver were shot by Mark Nettles. She did not survive her wounds, which Nettles was hired to inflict. Before the shooting, Taylor had a premature birth and discussed not having an abortion with her parents and neighbor Mark Boyd. Boyd was offended with Taylor's decision, feeling the child would be severely handicapped because Taylor herself required special visual courses. He paid Nettles $4000 for the job; Boyd was charged on second-degree murder and sentenced to 26 years in prison, while Nettles received six consecutive life sentences.
