Origin[]

Otto Lilienthal (1848-1896) was a German pioneer of aviation who was the first person to make well-documented, repeated, successful gliding flights, earning him the title of the Gliding King.

Newspapers and magazines published photographs of Lilienthal gliding, which favorably influenced public and scientific opinion about the possibility of flying machines becoming practical. Over his career studying aviation, he developed many models of gliders, aircraft with flapping wings, and biplanes, and experimented extensively on the idea of controlling them with shifting the center of gravity on the pilot's own body weight.

On August 9, 1896, while making his fourth flight of the day, his glider pitched forward, and the mechanism was unable to be righted in time. Falling from about 15 m (50 ft), he broke his neck, and died the next day.

Effects[]

When worn and the gloves are raised above the head, the weight of the user decreases. When lowered, the weight will increase. Snagged after its last owner broke into an office building - and broke his back - with it.
