Origin[]
Ronald Reagan began as a Hollywood actor and union leader and later become Governor of California and 40th President of the United States. He made an early switch from liberal to conservative, running with the Republican Party during his state and national elections.
His first term saw a failed assassination attempt, escalation of the War on Drugs and acts against labor unions. His second term revolved more around foreign affairs - the end of the Cold War, the bombing of Libya and the Iran-Contra Affair. His presidency as a whole saw the emergence of “Reaganomics”, which cut taxes to incite economic growth and encouraged less market regulation by the government. Although this decreased inflation, the amount of military spending heavily offset the federal budget and debt. He left office with a high approval rating of 68% and is normally ranked from mixed to favorably by scholars and citizens; his tenure saw the resurgence of conservative values in the United States.
