Origin[]

The Southern Cross Expedition of 1898 to 1900, led by Carsten Borchgrevink, was the first expedition to stay over-winter on the Arctic mainland. It was also the first to used dogs and sledges to travel across the continent. Although they survived the frigid conditions, traveled farther south than any before them, and were the first British venture to Antarctica, they were criticized on their return to England for a lack of extensive scientific measurements. Bound to be forgotten, they were instead remembered by fellow explorer Roald Amundsen as some of the pioneers of Antarctic exploration.

Of the many perils facing the expedition members, one of the most unexpected was fire - at one point, a fire broke out in the living quarters hut, nearly burned the entire structure down.

Effects[]

Imbued with the expedition member's shock at seeing their room in flames, this candle holder has been imbued with the ability to allow candles placed within it the ability to set fire to ice and snow. It was accidentally activated in 1948 in the Hope Bay Station, leading to the research station's destruction and the artifact's recovery.
