Origin[]

Founding father and 3rd American president, Thomas Jefferson ushered in some of the founding laws of the fledgling nation. He believed greatly in the fusion of the individual focused nature of democracy and the representative government seen in republicanism. Being a lawyer, he was versed enough in existing law to compose a large portion of the Declaration of Independence that satisfied his fellow countrymen. The colonists wanted not just a message for the British to shove it, but an explanation to the rest of the world on why they deserved to be independent.

“ We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government ”.

Over the course of his lifetime, Jefferson was studied surveying, agriculture, philosophical discourse, language and religion; his home Monticello was based on his own designs. However, a major source of income was the plantations he owned, which used several hundred slaves. Evidence later arose he had relations with one slave Sally Hemings and was the father to at least one child. Although many have applauded his contributions to the country’s political landscape, they have as equally criticized his personal life, especially since his liberal view on liberty and freedom seemed in direct conflict with owning people as property.
